Annual appraisal is a GMC statutory requirement for all doctors with a UK licence to practise. The process ensures that doctors are up to date and fit to practice.
Appraisal consists of constructive and professional dialogue, between appraiser and appraisee and covers the doctors whole scope of practice.
Objectives of the appraisal are to review previous twelve months work history, review supporting evidence, to discuss and agree a personal development plan, for the forthcoming twelve months. Reflection is an integral part of the appraisal and revalidation process and provides an opportunity for reflection about current performance and progress.
Appraisals should be a positive, constructive process which is mutually beneficial to both the individuals being appraised and also to the organisation where they work.
