REFLECTION




Reflection is an integral and significant part of the revalidation process You are required to reflect on your learning; what went well, what didn’t go so well? Have I or will change my practice as a result of what I have learnt?


You are also required to reflect on the feedback from colleagues and patients – did you have excellent feedback or was your feedback not as expected – what have you changed or what are you intending to change as a result of the feedback?




REQUIREMENTS FOR REVALIDATION



CPD



You are required to gain 50 CPD points per year – 25 external and 25 internal points.


External CPD - to include attendance at symposiums, workshops, conferences


Internal CPD – online learning, BLS, ALS, Grand rounds, self-directed study

QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS ACTIVITY



You are required to undertake a minimum of 1 audit in a 5 year revalidation cycle OR 2 case based discussions per year that have been discussed and signed off by a peer.


Audit

The audit should be either a local audit (record keeping) or an audit that is completed against National guidelines (eg NICE). They should include methodology / data collection process, analysis, results, recommendations for change and written reflection on improvements or changes to practice that have, or will be made.


Case Based discussions

These should include a synopsis of the case, the discussion that ensued along with reflection on the outcome of the case with any suggestions or improvements to practice.





COLLEAGUE AND PATIENT FEEDBACK



All doctors must participate in feedback exercises from colleagues (multi-source) and patients at least once in a 5-year revalidation cycle. In certain circumstances you may be exempt from patient feedback – eg if you work as a histo-pathologist or microbiologist. In such cases additional feedback may be requested from colleagues.


HLS can provide the relevant support to assist you to collate patient and colleague feedback anonymously. The format is per GMC guidance, however Royal College feedback is also acceptable as long as it is compliant with GMC guidance. The minimum requirement is feedback from 35 patients and 15 colleagues.






MANDATORY TRAINING



Mandatory training incurs CPD however a maximum of 11 points will be accepted to include SOVA, SOCA, and BLS.


Many of the elements of mandatory training are for entry into NHS organisations and are not directly pertaining to a doctor’s scope of practise, hence the reason why additional CPD is not accepted as part of the 50 CPD points required annually.
