Medical appraisal and revalidation services

What is an Appraisal?

Annual appraisal is a GMC statutory requirement for all doctors with a UK licence to practise. The process ensures that doctors are up to date and fit to practice.

Appraisal consists of constructive and professional dialogue, between appraiser and appraisee and covers the doctors whole scope of practice.

Objectives of the appraisal are to review previous twelve months work history, review supporting evidence, to discuss and agree a personal development plan, for the forthcoming twelve months. Reflection is an integral part of the appraisal and revalidation process and provides an opportunity for reflection about current performance and progress.

Appraisals should be a positive, constructive process which is mutually beneficial to both the individuals being appraised and also to the organisation where they work.

GMC Revalidation

Revalidation commenced in the UK in December 2012 and is the process by which all Doctors with a UK licence to practise are required to demonstrate on a regular basis that they are up to date and fit to practise in their chosen field and able to provide a good level of care. Essentially, holding a licence to practise is an indicator that the doctor continues to meet the professional standards set by the GMC.

Revalidation aims to give extra confidence to patients that their doctor is being regularly checked by their employer and the GMC.

Licensed doctors have to revalidate every five years, by having annual appraisal based on GMC’s core guidance for doctors, Good Medical Practice.

Annual appraisal is a retrospective process taking a look at clinical performance over the 12 months. Revalidation is the result of a review of a series of annual appraisals in which doctors will demonstrate that they are keeping up to date and are fit to practise. It covers a doctors’ whole scope of clinical practice.

We have the resources to provide an appraisal service and provide free access to a portal to ease the process.
